Conclusion

This report is the result of fundamental review of the building over the span of the academic year. All manner of writing and analysis and then conclusions reached were made to the best ability at the time it is written. The process of analyzing this building could be extended greatly into many different directions in the mechanical and all other parts of the building design. The outcomes of the report are about understanding mechanical system selection and the implications of system selection are in costs and energy. The existing building provided information into why a mechanical system is designed the way that it is and the decision making process that goes into it all. The most efficient system may not be selected for a myriad of reasons, however, it is always the responsibility of the design team to propose the most beneficial building with everything in mind to the environment, code considerations, sustainability, energy consumption and constructability.

The existing system could enjoy moderate improvement in general provided that any modifications would be acceptable to the owner. The decentralized VAV would be capable of being an alternative, but is not the strongest of the options available. The simple implementation of water cooled chillers over air cooled chillers would make the most substantial difference in energy costs and consumption over the system lifespan. The thermal envelope study also leads into how making the glass as electrochromic to deal with the solar loading would be a viable alternative while still achieving a relatively high transmission when the glass is in clear state. The implications of the glass indicate a further realm of development for the building as the overall loads would be able to decrease significantly with scheduling the windows at times when solar load would be greatest. The structural breadth indicated that the supporting steel frames for the system could be removed in entirety. The implication of this means that the other units would have to upsized appropriately , however, this was not pursued as any further structural analysis would have gone beyond the scope of the breadth.
